Pakistan Expresses Concern Over Khamenei’s Death in Airstrikes
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says: “The government and the people of Pakistan join the people of Iran in their hour of grief and sorrow and extend the most sincere condolences on the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.”
He adds that Pakistan “also expresses concern over violation of the norms of international law.
It is an age-old convention that the Heads of State/Government should not be targeted,” in a statement posted on the US social media platform X, without directly naming the US or Israel.
Tehran confirmed Khamenei’s death early Sunday following the bombardment of the capital on Saturday and announced a 40-day period of public mourning. Prior to the official confirmation, US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Khamenei had died.
Sharif also holds phone calls with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East. He emphasizes the urgent need for restraint, dialogue, and adherence to international law to maintain regional peace and stability.
In response to the rising tensions, Sharif postpones his planned visit to Russia, citing the volatile situation in the region.
