Afghanistan Reports Civilian Casualties in Clashes with Pakistan

(MENAFN) An Afghan government spokesman reports on Sunday that 55 civilians have died amid ongoing clashes along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, according to statements cited by reports.

Hamdullah Fitrat says that since Thursday, the fatalities include women and children, while the number of injured has reached 69. He adds that at least a dozen civilian homes have been destroyed. The casualties are reported across Paktika, Khost, Kunar, Nangarhar, and Kandahar provinces.

Pakistan maintains that its actions were in "self-defense" and asserts that no civilians were deliberately targeted. The country’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claims that 415 Afghan Taliban fighters and suspected militants have been killed, with more than 580 injured in airstrikes and ground clashes since Thursday.

Meanwhile, Kabul reports that 56 Pakistani soldiers have died in the border conflict.

Tensions escalated after Kabul launched “retaliatory operations” along the border following Pakistani airstrikes in late February. According to a combined tally from both sides, at least 81 people have been killed so far. This includes 12 Pakistani soldiers and one civilian, alongside 13 Afghan soldiers and 55 civilians. One Pakistani soldier remains missing.

Independent verification of the casualty figures provided by either side is not currently available.
