Russian Deputy PM Heads India Ahead of BRICS Summit in September

(MENAFN) Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov has arrived in New Delhi for a two-day official visit, as India prepares to host the BRICS summit in September.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko Andrey Yurevich indicated on Wednesday that President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend the summit.

Manturov’s trip is intended to lay the groundwork for the BRICS meeting and to prepare for a possible visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Moscow later this year. During his stay, Manturov is scheduled to hold discussions with Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and meet National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

He also co-chairs the annual India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) alongside Jaishankar.

The visit, accompanied by a Russian defense delegation, is particularly significant as India and Russia strengthen collaboration in the defense sector. In March, India approved acquisitions of defense equipment valued at $25 billion, including S‑400 air defense missile systems, as well as various aircraft and artillery systems, as part of its rapid military modernization program. The S-400 systems reportedly demonstrated their effectiveness during the brief military standoff between India and Pakistan in 2025.

Manturov’s visit is also expected to initiate discussions outlining the framework for Modi’s potential trip to Russia later this year. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned last month that Modi is scheduled to visit Russia for his annual summit with Putin.
