Deadly Attack in Northwestern Pakistan Leaves Six Paramilitary Troops Dead
The incident took place on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border, with reports citing unnamed security sources.
During the exchange of fire, eight suspected militants were reportedly killed and four paramilitary troops were injured. Security forces also managed to prevent what officials described as an attempted takeover of the checkpoint.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, although militant networks operating in the region, including factions associated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, have been linked to similar incidents in recent years.
The attack comes amid warnings of worsening security conditions in Pakistan. A recent assessment by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies noted a sharp deterioration in the security situation in May, driven largely by increased militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.
